You set the difficulty yourself before the round starts. The board is always 25 tiles and you choose how many of them are mines, anywhere from 1 to 24 - more mines means fewer safe tiles, a faster-climbing multiplier and a much shorter expected run. Every safe tile you reveal raises the multiplier by an amount that reflects the real remaining odds, and you can cash out after any tile. The decision the game actually turns on is when to stop, because the multiplier only means anything if you take it.

Mine positions are fixed by a committed seed pair before your first click, so the board cannot rearrange itself around where you are clicking - a common worry with this format, and one you can rule out yourself by recomputing the layout from the revealed seeds after the round. The maths carries a 7% house edge, which is applied to the multiplier rather than hidden in the odds, so the number on screen is what you are actually being paid. Payouts are returned as Rust skins by Steam trade offer.
